2013 São Paulo Summer School FAQs
What is the official language of the 2013 São Paulo Summer School?
All Summer School courses, lectures and workshops will be taught in English.
What is the target audience for the Summer School?
The target audience is high-potential, upper-level scholars of political science, international relations, and related disciplines. Preference will be given to current faculty members, post-doctoral and doctoral students. Truly exceptional master students of those same areas will also be considered. The acceptance of candidates for the Summer School will depend on methods knowledge, as well as availability in the specific course.
Where will the classes be taught?
Classes will be held in the School of Philosophy, Letters and Humanities (FFLCH), on the campus of the University of São Paulo (USP) located at Av. I am a foreign student. Do I need a Brazilian visa?
Most citizens of Latin American origin will not need visas to travel to Brazil. However, Brazil does require visas of some foreign nationals. Please call your local Brazilian consulate to verify your status before traveling.
Are there a minimum number of enrolled students per course?
Courses with less than 13 registered students will be cancelled. Students who had applied to these courses will be reallocated to their second choice courses.
Is there a waiting list for the Summer School courses?
For those students who do not pay the registration fee on a timely basis, slots will be allocated to those applicants on the waiting list.
Is it possible to apply for a one-week course and a two-week course?
Given the extreme rigor of the coursework, which will be taught in English, the Summer School does not permit concurrent enrollment. Students may participate in the Summer School by applying to the “Refresher course in mathematics and statistics” that will take place from January 21 to January 24, 2013. In the following week, all two-week courses will commence. There are two courses that will only be offered for one week each - "Knowing and the known: philosophical foundations of the social sciences" and “Techniques for analyzing public opinion for political and economic decision makers”. They will both be offered from January 28 to February 1st.
Will the Summer School offer course completion certificates to students?
Students who successfully complete the coursework and satisfy the attendance requirements will receive a course completion certificate.
APPLICATIONS and REGISTRATION
I have never been to a São Paulo Summer School. How do I create a user login?
If you are a new student of the São Paulo Summer School, you must first click on the link below the login button to generate a user (http://summerschool.fflch.usp.br/applications/users/login). In the following steps, you will be asked to create a username, password, and inform your name and e-mail.
What information is required on the application?
The online application requires applicants to provide biographical and contact information, as well as indicate course preferences. Applicants must choose their intended courses of enrollment ranking courses in order of preferences ("1" is the most preferred course and "3" is the least preferred course). Applicants will also have to upload a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor.
When I try to generate a user to the online application, the follow message appears: “This e-mail address is already registered in the system”. What can I do?
If you had already created an account for the last São Paulo IPSA Summer School, you must use the same username and password. If you do not remember them, please click on the bottom of the page to request a new password. You will receive a message with a code that will allow you to reset your password. You must click on the link and register a new password on the webpage that is opened by the system. After registering the new password, please login again. Please remember to copy and paste your new password, since in some cases your computer may be automatically filling in the blank with the old password. Please note that the code to re-set your password may be used only once. If you lose or are not certain about your password, you must repeat the procedure outlined above.
What admissions criteria does Summer School use?
The acceptance of candidates for the Summer School will depend on a candidates qualifications including methods knowledge, as well as availability in the specific course.
I have already submitted the application form. What is the next step?
After submitting the application form, applicants will receive a message of confirmation that will include a username (which is the registration number). Please make note of your registration number and password since they will be used to access information and course materials throughout the Summer School.
The confirmation e-mail that you received after you created the user on our website contains the link you have to use to send your recommendation letter. Be sure to send this link to the person responsible for issuing the letter. It is through this link that the letter must be sent. You can also access the link after login, on the bottom of the "Applications" page. Please note that your application will not be considered complete until the letter of recommendation has been submitted.
I received a confirmation e-mail of my application. What is the next step?
Applicants will receive a response to their application to the Summer School by September 30th. The next steps are to confirm course enrollment.
To confirm course enrollment, applicants must pay the registration fee. A copy of the bank deposit or receipt will need to be uploaded to the online system before November 20th. For those students who do not pay the registration fee on a timely basis, slots will be allocated to those applicants on the wait list.
I haven't received an e-mail confirming that my application has been received. What should I do?
If you by any chance have not received an email, please contact the Summer School via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Do I have to submit a recommendation letter by a faculty member for my application, even if I am a faculty member with a finished Ph.D.?
Yes, you also have to provide a recommendation letter. The letter may be written by a colleague in your department.
What should be the format of the letter of recommendation?
The letter of recommendation should be sent prior to the closing date for which applications will be received. The letter can be in English, Spanish or Portuguese. There is no limitation of extension. The file must be in PDF format and be less than 1MB in size.
How should I submit the letter of recommendation?

PAYMENT & PRICING
How much are the registration fees?
The registration fees are as follows:
Professors at institutions of higher education:
Members of the public sector and NGOs
Members of the private sector:
(*)The refresh fee is correspondent to a 1-week course.
Registration fees for individual one-week courses will be US$ 200; US$400, US$ 500 and US$600, respectively. If you want to apply for more than one course, you must add the fees. For example, if you are student enrolling in the Refresher Course and also in a two week course, the total fee is $200 + $350. When should I pay the registration fee?
Upon notification of acceptance, students must pay their registration fee no later than midnight on November 30, 2012 to guarantee that their slot is reserved. After that date, the selection committee will fill any remaining and unreserved spaces with those candidates next in line on the admissions list.
Who can apply as a student?
You can apply as a student only if you are enrolled in a graduate course at a university. Your student status should be confirmed by the faculty member writing your recommendation letter.
Are there available sources of funding for securing a place during the courses?
Thanks to support from the International Political Science Association, the Summer School has a special scholarship for Ph.D. students from Latin America. Applicants to the scholarship fund must submit a letter and two supporting letters of recommendation. Please send all materials to email@example.com.
Can I get a refund of my registration fee?
Because the registration fees are a guarantee of student enrollment and will be used to plan and pay for certain expenses prior to the Summer School, registration fees cannot be reimbursed under any circumstances.
Is it possible to get funding for personal expenses?
Students will be responsible for their own expenses in São Paulo, including travel to and from São Paulo, room and board, transportation and entertainment.
