Prof. Gary King, Harvard University, inspires in Keynote Address for our 10th Anniversary

The IPSA-USP Summer School has been offering courses since 2009, making the 2019 edition our special tenth anniversary. To celebrate the occassion, we invited Gary King, Albert J. Weatherhead III University Professor at Harvard University, and Director ofthe Institute for Quantitative Social Science, to deliver a keynote address to a packed audience in the auditorium of the Brasiliana Library on Wednesday, January 16th.

In his keynote address “How the News Media Activate Public Expression and Influence National Agendas”, Professor King outlined the planning, methodological innovations and novel conclusions of this ambitious study, which has provided compelling evidence that articles written in local newspapers really can change political discussion, for example raising discussion on broad policy areas by around two-thirds on Twitter.

Based on the response of the students and faculty present, the address was a fascinating insight into how top scholars in the world conduct large research projects, and provided a number of tips for young scholars seeking to follow in his footsteps.

Our other special tenth anniversary event was a Roundtable titled “What will Political Science look like in Ten Years’ Time?”, which included the participation of Gary King, Dirk Berg-Schlosser (Marburg and IPSA), Guy Whitten (Texas A & M) and Lorena G. Barberia (São Paulo) on Thursday, January 17th.
