TRACK: COMPARATIVE RESEARCH WITH INTERVIEWS AND ETHNOGRAPHY

Course 3 -
Ethnographic Fieldwork in Political Science

Faculty:
Edward Schatz, University of Toronto

Teaching Assistant:
Vicente Ferraro, University of São Paulo

Course Description

This course considers the practice of ethnographic fieldwork in political science. By fieldwork we mean research conducted in situ, rather than in an office or a laboratory, and over a significant period of time, rather than via a short, targeted visit. By ethnographic, we mean research conducted with an eye to learning insiders’ worldviews.

The course asks what types of political questions are amenable to such approaches and explores what makes such approaches successful.

Dates - This course runs January 27-31, 2020.
